Purdue connection: 'Magic' bike impresses time

January 8, 2006

A Purdue University engineering professor and two former students have invented a three-wheel training bicycle that "magically" converts to a two-wheeler. The bicycle, known as SHIFT, was honored by Time as one of the "Most Amazing Inventions of 2005."The bike, which its inventors say could be mass-produced for about $100, features two hubs in the back, each supporting its own wheel. At low speeds, tension keeps the hubs and wheels apart. As the rider achieves faster speeds, tension is relieved and the hubs and wheels move closer together.

The contraption was built by professor Scott Shim and Ryan Lightbody and Matt Grossman.
