Going Hollywood: Ball State, Purdue students win film awards

Student filmmakers from Ball State and Purdue universities have won medals in the prestigious 33rd annual Student Academy Awards.

Ball State's Travis Hatfield and Samuel Day won a gold medal in the Alternative category for "Perspective," a romantic drama about a young man trying to resolve a lost love.

Purdue graduate Mak Hossain won a bronze in the Documentary category for "Three Beauties," about the challenges faced by young girls in his homeland of Bangladesh.

The awards were presented Saturday in Beverly Hills, Calif., by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, home of the Oscars. Former winners include Spike Lee, Robert Zemeckis ("Forrest Gump"), and John Lasseter ("Toy Story").

Gold medalists win 5,000, silver medalists receive $3,000 and bronze medalists get $2,000.
