Purdue Agriculture And Extension EventsWeeks: 4/29/08 – 5/16/08For additional information, call (765) 494-8396 APRIL 29: TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES TO REDUCE PASTURE STRESS WORKSHOP Tools and techniques to reduce pasture stress in the future and increase yields will be the focus of this April 29 workshop in Greenfield, Ind. The workshop, which will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m., is the last in a three-part series to help producers return pasture and hay land back to peak productivity. Topics will include the stocking rate or the number of livestock a pasture will support, rotational grazing techniques and paddock design. Preregistration for the free workshop is requested by calling the Purdue Extension office in Hancock County at (317) 462-1113. Site details will be given to participants upon preregistration. APRIL 29 & 30, MAY 1: FISH CLEANING WORKSHOP There will be three fish cleaning workshops around Indiana. Participants will have a chance to watch and listen as experts show how to clean and filet different fish species. This program is for anyone regardless of experience level. Each workshop has a registration fee of $10 and is payable at the door. Also, registration is requested by the day of the workshop to each local Purdue Extension office. The April 29 workshop will be at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in Connersville, the April 30 workshop will be at the Monroe County Fairgrounds in Bloomington, and the May 1 workshop will be at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Crawfordsville. MAY 1: NOMINATION DEADLINE FOR ANIMAL SCIENCES ALUMNI AWARD The nomination deadline for Purdue's 2008 Distinguished Animal Sciences Alumni Award is May 1. The Distinguished Animal Sciences Alumni Award recipients represent excellence in industry, academia, government service or other endeavors based on leadership, community service and professional accomplishments. The award is open to any animal science graduate who earned a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree from Purdue. Nomination forms are available at http://www.ansc.purdue.edu/alumni/ANSC_DAA2008.pdf. MAY 3: BEGINNING BEEKEEPING SERIES: WORKING WITH BEES IN THE FIELD The 2008 Beginning Beekeeping Series: Working With Bees in the Field will be 6:30-9:30 p.m. May 3 at the Purdue Extension Hancock County Office in Greenfield. The workshop will teach the skills needed to successfully work with and keep bees. Participants will also have the opportunity to assemble hives, handle bees and examine hives. MAY 8: CENTRAL INDIANA COMMERCIAL FRUIT GROWERS TWILIGHT MEETING The 2008 Central Indiana Commercial Fruit Growers Twilight Meeting will be at the Anderson Orchard in Mooresville from 5:30-8:30 p.m. May 8. The meeting will include the progress of the 2008 fruit crop and methods used to help it get to this point in development. Discussion will include the impact of the late spring freeze and drought of 2007 on tree condition and this year's fruit crop. Featured topics will be fire blight preventions/control, control of mites and codling moth and effective fruit thinning. MAY 12 & 16: OPERATING AN EFFICIENT FARMERS' MARKET Operating an Efficient Farmers' Market will be held at six Indiana locations to help inform market operators and vendors learn about Indiana's food handling regulations, alternative payment programs and recent trends. The Purdue workshop will give an overview of state regulations for food handling presented by the Indiana Board of Health and the Indiana Board of Animal Health, as well as updates on the Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program. Registration costs $25 and includes workshop materials and snacks. The workshop will begin at 8 a.m. with registration and refreshments and will adjourn at 12:30 p.m. The May 12 workshop will be in Greencastle at the Putnam County Fairgrounds, Harris Hall; registration is due April 30. The May 16 workshop will be in Bedford at the Purdue Extension office in Lawrence County; registration is due by May 1.
