NOV. 12-13, 16-17, 19-20, 23-24, Nov. 30-DEC. 1; DEC. 3-4: PURDUE INCOME TAX SCHOOLS These two-day programs for tax professionals provide training on current tax law and regulations and offer practical information for tax preparation of individual and small-business returns. This year's Income Tax School will review recently enacted tax and tax-related legislation, focusing on provisions that are taking effect or ending. One hour of the program, usually at the end of the day, will be devoted to agricultural tax issues. Instructors include certified public accountants and retired Internal Revenue Service professionals. Income Tax School dates and locations include: Nov. 12-13, Horizon Convention Center, 401 S. NOV. 7: FOREST AND WILDLIFE FIELD TOUR This event, co-sponsored by Purdue's Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, is intended for forest landowners and anyone interested in forests and wildlife. The event takes place from 8:30-11:30 a.m. The tour begins at the Morgan County Fairgrounds in Martinsville. From there, participants will travel to tour stops at Morgan-Monroe State Forest. The tour focuses on the effects of wildlife on forests and general forest management. It includes demonstration and research sites that are part of the Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment, a study of forest management and its impacts conducted by a partnership among various universities and the Indiana Division of Forestry. Bus transportation to and from Morgan-Monroe State Forest will be provided. Bus access will be limited once in the forest, and tour attendees should be prepared to walk and for any type of field condition. Registration is $5 and space is limited. Anyone involved with grain harvest, storage, marketing or feeding is encouraged to call in or log on to get the latest information on better managing the 2009 corn crop. Topics include grain drydown and agronomic considerations, ear rots and mycotoxins, crop insurance considerations, livestock feeding implications, and marketing considerations. Time will be allotted for questions. There is no cost to participate. Interested individuals should dial 800-244-5901 just prior to the event and enter the pass code 938725 when prompted. Main St., Danville. Participants will explore the power behind cooperatives. Guest speakers, such as Gerry Dick of Inside INdiana Business and Adam Schwartz of the National Cooperative Business Association, will talk about the importance of being involved with cooperatives. NOV. 18-19: PURDUE EXTENSION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE This conference will begin at noon on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. The annual conference provides personal and professional development for all educators and specialists. This year's theme is Purdue Extension Providing Hope: Helping Others Prepare Everyday. CONTACT: Janet Bechman, 765-494-8309 DEC. 1: GROWING THE BIOECONOMY: SOLUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABILITY Agricultural economists Wally Tyner and Steven Wu will discuss biofuels and the future of renewable energy during this conference from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. EST. The conference's keynote speaker is James Lovelock, a renowned thinker on global environmental science. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Secretary of Energy Steven Chu are invited speakers. Conference topics range from advances and breakthroughs in biofuels to biochar, which is the leftover material after cellulose is converted into fuel. Purdue Extension and Purdue's Energy Center at Discovery Park are hosting a conference viewing site in Stewart Center on the university's West Lafayette campus. The conference also can be viewed online. Registration is $75 for those viewing the conference at Stewart Center and $50 for online viewing. DEC. 7, 9, 10: PURDUE AGRICULTURAL TAX WORKSHOPS These half-day programs provide tax preparers in-depth coverage of selected farm and agricultural tax problems to supplement material presented in the Purdue Income Tax Schools. The ag tax workshops will be taught by Dan O'Sullivan, a retired revenue agent who operates a grain farm in Hendricks County. Workshop dates and locations include: Dec. 7, Vanderburgh County 4-H Center, U.S. 41, Evansville; Dec. 9, Wyndham Hotel, 2544 Executive Drive, Indianapolis; and Dec. 10, Ramada Plaza Hotel, 2521 E. Center St., Warsaw. Each workshop begins at 8 a.m. and sessions start at 8:30 a.m. All times are local.
