4 distinguished chemists to lecture on anticancer science

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Scientists from three continents will be at Purdue University on April 3 to talk about synthetic anticancer drugs and the biology and chemistry of cancer treatment as part of the 21st annual Herbert C. Brown Lectures in Chemistry.

The program, which will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 214, will share the theme of "Organometallics for Organic Synthesis." Herbert C. Brown, the 1979 Nobel laureate for whom the series was named, will offer closing remarks.

The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are recommended. Reservations are required for the lunch and banquet, to take place at 11:50 a.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union's Sagamore Room. A social hour and banquet will follow at 6 p.m. at the Lafayette Country Club.

Speakers and lecture topics include:

• Kohei Tamao of Kyoto University, Japan, will speak on "My Favorite Silicon and Boron for Organic Synthesis and Materials Science."

• Phillip Kociencski of the University of Leeds, England, will speak on "Asymmetric Synthesis with Pi-Allyl Metal Complexes."

• Ian Paterson of the University of Cambridge, England, will speak on "Stereocontrolled Synthesis of Polyketides of Marine Origin as Promising Anticancer Agents."

• Paul Wender of Stanford University will speak on "Synthesis Futures: New Reactions and New Medicinal Leads."

The lectures are made possible by Brown and his wife, Sarah Baylen Brown, who endowed the H.C. Brown Lectures, H.C. Brown Distinguished Chairship and the H.C. Brown Center for Borane Research.
