Grand Alternative events offer alcohol-free fun before Grand Prix

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Dozens of Purdue University campus organizations, offices, departments and student organizations are teaming up to provide substance-free activities for Purdue students during the annual Grand Prix celebration.

Grand Alternative 2004 will include fitness sports competitions, musical performances, dances, fitness classes, drug- and alcohol-abuse education, organized recreational sporting events, cultural events and dozens of other activities.

Grand Alternative got its start in 1998 when Steve Cain, campus minister at the Wesley Foundation, initiated a community-wide coalition of student groups with the goal of celebrating the Grand Prix safely and without alcohol. Grand Alternative got its official start in 1999 with a grant from the Coalition for a Safe and Drug-Free Tippecanoe County.

"Since 1999, the number of events has grown significantly," said Bridget Golden, assistant dean of students. "Student organizations now have the opportunity to apply for mini-grants to fund substance-free programs during Grand Alternative."

Grand Alternative 2004 is funded in part by a grant from the Coalition for a Safe and Drug-Free Tippecanoe County and is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students, with support from the Student Wellness Office, Division of Recreational Sports and the Wesley Foundation. All events are free unless otherwise noted.
