May 10, 2004 Purdue to offer free hearing, speech screeningsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - As part of May's Better Hearing and Speech Month, Purdue University's nationally ranked audiology and speech-language program will offer free hearing and speech screenings from 1-4 p.m. on May 24 and May 26 for people of all ages.
"Most adults have not had a hearing or speech screening since they attended public school," says Barbara Solomon, director of the Speech-Language Clinic. "This service is a great opportunity to increase public awareness about hearing loss, the effects of noise on hearing, and speech and language development. Screening participants also can learn about the diagnostic and treatment options available for speech, language and hearing problems." The screenings, in their fourth year, will be conducted in the M.D. Steer Audiology and Speech-Language Clinics in the basement level of Heavilon Hall, with check-in at Room B-11. To schedule an appointment, call (765) 494-4229. The clinic will provide referrals for any patients who need additional testing. Lata Krishnan, director of the audiology clinic, says anyone who has difficulty hearing ordinary conversational speech should make an appointment. "Hearing loss is a gradual process, and many adults don't realize they have a problem," she says. "Many people first notice they have difficulty hearing when they are trying to listen in a noisy room. Other people who need to be screened include those who have a history of ear infections and exposure to loud noises, as well as those who hear ringing in their ears." The audiology clinic provides diagnostic and rehabilitative services for all ages. Services include complete hearing assessments, hearing aid and assistive listening device fitting, as well as adult and pediatric hearing rehabilitation to optimize listening skills and hearing aid use. The Speech-Language Clinic offers an adult language program for patients following a stroke or other brain injuries, an adult geriatric program at the Indiana Veteran's Home, a voice therapy program, as well as a variety of programs for children that include a preschool language group. Purdue's Department of Audiology and Speech Sciences is ranked among the top 10 in the nation by U.S.News & World Report. The master's and doctoral degree program in speech-language pathology and audiology are ranked third and eighth, respectively, Writer: Amy Patterson-Neubert, (765) 494-9723, apatterson@purdue.edu Sources: Lata Krishnan, (765) 494-3789, krishnal@purdue.edu Barbara Solomon, (765) 494-3820, bsolomon@purdue.edu Purdue News Service: (765) 494-2096; purduenews@purdue.edu PHOTO CAPTION: A publication-quality photograph is available at http://news.uns.purdue.edu/images/+2004/solomon-test.jpg
