June 11, 2004 Purdue grad receives governors awardWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Stephanie Warner, a 2004 graduate of Purdue University's School of Agriculture, will be one of 10 recipients of the Governor's Award for Tomorrow's Leaders, which will be presented at a June 17 luncheon.
Indiana first lady Maggie Kernan will present the annual awards for the statewide program that recognizes outstanding young leaders ages 19-29 from across Indiana. Each recipient also receives $1,000. Warner, of South Whitley, Ind., was active in student government and served as student body president. She co-chaired the Mortar Board Leadership Conference and was vice president of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, on the Purdue Foundation Student Board and an active member of Iron Key. She has received numerous awards including the Flora Roberts Outstanding Senior Woman Award and the Charles O. McGaughey Leadership Award. Last week she started her job as a program specialist for the Indiana FFA. "Working with FFA is one of the things I love the most," she said. "I'm working with student leadership like I was before I graduated, but now I have a paycheck." Warner is giving $500 of her $1,000 award to Purdue and $500 to FFA. The Indiana Humanities Council created the award program as part of the Indiana Leadership Summit. Purdue President Martin C. Jischke serves on the 2004 Indiana Leadership Summit steering committee. "I'm very appreciative of Dr. Jischke and the other members of the steering and selection committees for recognizing me with this award," Warner said. "This is a tribute to all of the great students we have at Purdue, and I'm honored to have been one of them." Bridget Williams Golden, assistant dean of students and adviser to Purdue Student Government, nominated Warner for the award. "When I was approached to nominate a Purdue student for this award, I immediately thought of Stephanie," Golden said. "She is an outstanding leader and truly represents the best and brightest Purdue and the state of Indiana have to offer."
