09/01-- State and federal lawmakers, private donors and Purdue University faculty and administrators met on campus today (Friday, 9/7) for the announcement that the university will build a $100 millon Discovery Park, which will include the $51 million Birck Nanotechnology Center. U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., (left) championed the cause by helping lead the effort to secure federal funds to seed the venture. Michael J. Birck (center), a Purdue trustee and chairman of Chicago-area telecommunications equipment maker Tellabs Inc., and his wife, Katherine, contributed $30 million toward the nanotechnology center. Silicon Valley entrepreneur Donald and Carol Scifres, Purdue alumni and Lafayette-area natives, contributed $10 million. Purdue President Martin C. Jischke (right) conceptualized and generated support for the project, the largest academic research facility in Purdue's history. Michael Birck is originally from Clinton, Ind., and Katherine Birck is a Terre Haute, Ind., native. Also on hand were Gov. Frank O'Bannon, members of the State Budget Committee, other Indiana and congressional legislators, who worked to secure state and federal funding for the project.
