09/02-- This physics-based image shows what likely happened to the Pentagon's steel-reinforced concrete columns as they were struck by the aircraft. The orange-colored portion represents the large amount of fuel onboard as it crashed into the building like a massive river of fluid. Civil engineers specializing in reinforced concrete structures teamed up with computer scientists to create this image. Because the simulation is scientifically precise, it could be used as a tool for designing critical buildings – such as hospitals or fire stations – to withstand terrorist attacks.
