12/02-- Nanoparticles form gradually after a semiconductor is dipped into a solution of metal salt. The cycle progresses from a surface of bare germanium (at the 12 o'clock position) progressing clockwise to the same surface 500 minutes after immersion. The process occurs naturally, without the expensive equipment that is otherwise necessary to produce high-purity metals. (Graphic/Lon Porter)
