Purdue researcher Rick Howard collects a toad for his studies on their mating behavior. Howard and his colleagues are examining the vocalizations or "calls" generated by males to attract mates. His studies show that females prefer the calls of older, larger males, and that males may disguise their voices to increase their chances of luring a mate. The findings may pose new questions about the role played by genetics in natural selection. Howard's studies focus on American toads, whose mating season generally lasts only 48 hours.
