1/97--The medicinal leech, once used in medicine to draw blood from patients, may provide new clues to neural regeneration. Purdue researcher Christie Sahley and her research assistant, Orie Shafer (background), are using the leeches to analyze the role nitric oxide synthase plays in a regenerating nervous system.
