4/97-- Crews remove an underground gasoline tank at an Indiana Department of Transportation maintenance site in Monticello to clean the contaminated soil left behind by leaking gasoline. Left alone, or with a little encouragement from added nutrients, bacteria in the soil may eat the offending chemicals. Purdue engineer Loring Nies is developing guidelines for using bacteria for bioremediation.
