02/98-- Purdue student Matthew Allen shines ultraviolet light on a dish containing small gray structures made of porous silicon, causing the structures to emit a bright orange light. Purdue chemist Jillian Buriak (left) has found a way to stabilize the surface of porous silicon so its light-emitting properties can be used to develop new types of sensors and optoelectronic devices.
