Purdue Agriculture And Extension EventsWeeks: 7/8/08-7/31/08 JULY 8: SUMMER AQUACULTURE WORKSHOP The Indiana Soybean Alliance, in partnership with Purdue Extension, will host free aquaculture workshops. The first one, in Miami County, will be on the cage culture of fish. Participants will learn about different types of fish that are raised in cages. At the end of the workshop, a tour of Sweetwater Springs Fish Farm, which specializes in dealing with fish and cage culture, will be offered. There is limited seating for this free workshop. JULY 8: 2008 PURDUE WEED DAY This event will begin at 9 a.m. at the Beck Educational Center, located about seven miles from Purdue's campus. During the field day, participants will be able to look at the corn and popcorn trials that were planted in late April and early May. Discussion on the weeds and their treatment will be covered while touring the different trials. JULY 11: SUMMER AQUACULTURE WORKSHOP This is the second in a series of six workshops dealing with aquaculture and how to start raising and selling fish. The workshop, at the Salem Chapel United Methodist Church in LaPorte County, will focus on the recirculating culture of fish. After the session, there will be a tour of Mixsawnah State Fish Hatchery to look at their operation and see how they deal with the recirculating culture of their fish. JULY 15: MIDWEST REGIONAL TURF FIELD DAY The Midwest Regional Turf Field Day will take place at Purdue's WH Daniel Turfgrass Research and Diagnostic Center. In the morning participants will tour the lawn and sports turf research area where crabgrass control, efficient fertilizer programs and hot weather diseases of ornamentals will be discussed. After lunch, there will be a trade show and equipment demonstrations, followed by workshops that will cover weed control in lawns. Registration was due by June 30, and the cost is $30 for members, $40 for non-members or $125 for companies that are members of the Midwest Regional Turf Foundation. JULY 20-23: 41ST ANNUAL TOP FARMER CROP WORKSHOP This workshop, which begins at 3 p.m. July 20 at Purdue University, will cover a wide variety of topics related to farming. Some of the topics that will be discussed include ways to save and earn more money. Information on the latest technology advancements in the farming industry, weather, soil conditions, and ways to deal with rising food and fuel prices are some of the topics covered during the workshop sessions. JULY 24: ORGANIC PRODUCTION AND PROCESSING – TRANSITIONING TO ORGANIC The 2008 Farm Sustainability Tour continues at Langeland Farms in Decatur County with a workshop on organic food production. Participants will visit different farms in Decatur County that use organic practices. One of the keynote speakers will be Gary Reding, who will talk about the organic practices used on Langeland Farms including the transition of the farm from non-organic to a certified organic farm. JULY 28: TWILIGHT ORGANIC TOUR This event will take place starting at 7 p.m. at the Southwest Purdue Ag Center in Vincennes. The tour will cover several different topics pertaining to organic farming. Some of the topics include the definition of organic, the process for organic certification, cover crops, soil fertility, and ways to control weeds and insects. The tour is free. JULY 31: TRI-STATE CONSERVATION TILLAGE CONFERENCE This conference will talk about ideas for farmers to save resources and time by using conservation tillage methods in their food production operations. The seminar, which will take place at the Vanderburgh County Fairgrounds, will feature guest speakers from Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. They will present topics such as no-till corn and wheat planted in a continuous rotation, the ideal habitat for soil biology, information on cover crops, and a session on how to apply your knowledge about no-till to your farm. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the last session concludes at 3:50 p.m. (CST). This free event is made possible due to the Indiana State Department of Agriculture’s Clean Water Indiana Program.
