OCT. 28-29: WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT TRAINING WORKSHOP
This workshop, geared toward Purdue Extension personnel and employees of the Natural Resource Conservation Service and Soil and Water Conservation districts, takes place at Triple H Gun Club in Linton. Workshop attendees will be introduced to the four major components of wildlife habitat: food, cover, water and space. Information on habitat management practices and invasive species control also will be provided. The program includes eight hours of classroom instruction and eight hours of field observation. OCT. 30-31: CORN COUNTRY COMMERCIAL GOAT CONFERENCE
Commercial goat producers can learn about everything from forages and fence options to marketing and doe herd traits during this conference at the Harrison County Fairgrounds in Corydon. The conference, sponsored by Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service in Harrison and Clark counties, will feature university speakers from Purdue, Tennessee State, Oklahoma State and Langston, as well as from the meat goat industry. The event begins with registration and a trade show at 11 a.m. Oct. 30. The first session, improving reproductive efficiency, will begin at 12:30 p.m. There is no fee to attend the conference, but registration is required. Individuals can register by calling the Purdue Extension office in Harrison County at 812-738-4236 or in Clark County at 812-256-4591. Lunch will be provided the second day. Not affiliated with the conference, but occurring simultaneously, is the second annual Cream of the Crop Kiko Sale, which will begin at 1 p.m. Oct. 31 at the fairgrounds and feature more than 120 goats. These two-day programs for tax professionals provide training on current tax law and regulations and offer practical information for tax preparation of individual and small business returns. This year's Income Tax School will review recently enacted tax and tax-related legislation, focusing on provisions that are taking effect or ending. One hour of the program, usually at the end of the day, will be devoted to agricultural tax issues. Instructors include certified public accountants and retired Internal Revenue Service professionals. NOV. 7: FOREST AND WILDLIFE FIELD TOUR
This event, co-sponsored by Purdue's Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, is intended for forest landowners and anyone interested in forests and wildlife. The event takes place from 8:30-11:30 a.m. The tour begins at the Morgan County Fairgrounds in Martinsville. From there, participants will travel to tour stops at Morgan-Monroe State Forest. The tour focuses on the effects of wildlife on forests and general forest management. It includes demonstration and research sites that are part of the Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment, a study of forest management and its impacts conducted by a partnership among various universities and the Indiana Division of Forestry. Bus transportation to and from Morgan-Monroe State Forest will be provided. Bus access will be limited once in the forest, and tour attendees should be prepared to walk and for any type of field condition. Registration is $5 and space is limited. DEC. 7, 9, 10: PURDUE AGRICULTURAL TAX WORKSHOPS These half-day programs provide tax preparers in-depth coverage of selected farm and agricultural tax problems to supplement material presented in the Purdue Income Tax Schools. The ag tax workshops will be taught by Dan O'Sullivan, a retired revenue agent who operates a grain farm in Hendricks County. Workshop dates and locations include: Dec. 7, Vanderburgh County 4-H Center, U.S. 41, Evansville; Dec. 9, Wyndham Hotel, 2544 Executive Drive, Indianapolis; and Dec. 10, Ramada Plaza Hotel, 2521 E. Center St., Warsaw. Each workshop begins at 8 a.m. and sessions start at 8:30 a.m. All times are local. Registration is $99 per person for those attending a Purdue Income Tax School and $159 for others. The fee includes the 2009 National Income Tax School Workbook.
