February 25, 2000 Mortar Board promotes national reading projectWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue students will advocate "Reading Is Leading" during activities next week. Members of the Barbara Cook Chapter of Mortar Board will collect books Feb. 28 through March 6. Book drives by the chapters at Purdue, Indiana and other Big Ten universities are part of the organization's national project. Purdue students will work with local bookstores, including Little Professor and Teacher's Delight, and campus housing groups to collect books for children. Collection sites will be set up in the offices of Windsor, Earhart, Hillenbrand and Harrison residence halls and at the Office of the Dean of Students, Room 250, Schleman Hall. Checks made out to "Charity Mortar Board" also will be accepted. The collected items will be donated to the Community and Family Resource Center in Lafayette. Mortar Board members also are organizing events at Klondike Elementary School, West Lafayette, on March 2 to coincide with Dr. Seuss' birthday. The activities will include a lunch of green eggs and ham and a story time featuring Purdue football player Chris Daniels and basketball player Carson Cunningham. The story times are tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The national Mortar Board organization promotes "Reading Is Leading" to get people back into books by advocating reading. The project gives members the chance to engage in leadership while performing an important service to the community within the framework of promoting knowledge.
