Philosophy department announces fall speaker series

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University Department of Philosophy will begin its Fall 2004 Colloquium Series on Sept. 16.

All sessions, which are free and open to the public, are scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

  • Sept. 16, "The Refutation of Idealism," by Jacqueline Marina, associate professor of philosophy at Purdue, Beering Hall, Room 1268.

  • Sept. 30, "The Structure of Desire and Recognition: Self-Consciousness and Self-Constitution," by Robert Brandom, professor of philosophy at University of Pittsburgh, Beering Hall, Room 1268.

  • Oct. 29, "Second-Personal Reasons and the Dignity of Persons," by Stephen Darwall, professor of philosophy, University of Michigan, Beering Hall, Room 2290.

  • Dec. 2, "Monism," by Jonathan Schaffer, assistant professor of philosophy, University of Massachusetts, Beering Hall, Room 1268.

    Copies of the professors' research papers will be available a few days before each talk in the Purdue Philosophy Office, Beering Hall, Room 7105.
