September 15, 2004 German expert to discuss future of American-European relationshipWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Retired German diplomat Hans Arnold will present the lecture "Europe and the U.S., Where Do We Go From Here? A German Perspective" on Oct. 4 at Purdue University. Arnold, who is touring the United States in October, will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union's East Faculty Lounge. His lecture, which examines the future of American relations with Germany and the so-called "Old Europe," is free and open to the public. Following work at German embassies in Washington, D.C., Paris, The Hague, Rome and Geneva, Switzerland, Arnold was bureau chief for foreign minister Willy Brandt and head of the cultural section of the Foreign Ministry. He lectures at the Academy for Political Science in Munich and has published books on transatlantic issues, including "Germany's Power" in 1995 and "Security for Europe" in 2002. His most recent book, "How Much Unity Does Europe Need?" analyzes the future of Europe. The history, political science and foreign languages and literatures departments are sponsoring Arnold's lecture. A reception will follow his presentation.
