Residence hall reapplication period begins

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University will allow current residents to be the first to reserve residence hall rooms and apartments for the 2005-06 school year.

Students currently living in University Residences will have priority over new students on next year's rooms, including the opportunity to request specific rooms. Reapplication will run from Feb. 1 through March 10.

"Typically, 40 percent of the students living in the residence halls and apartments return to live in the halls the following year," said Ernest F. Poland, executive director of University Residences. "University Residences provides a wide range of housing options, including apartments, suites and single rooms. Students are also close to campus and are provided a wide variety of convenient dining options and programs specially designed for our residents.

"Purdue has two goals for housing occupancy. First, to house all upperclass students who want to return to live in the halls, and second, to provide housing to all freshmen who want to live in a residence hall. Purdue is one of the largest schools in the nation that does not require freshmen to live in the residence halls."

In connection with the reapplication period, University Residences will offer several special programs during the week of Jan. 31 to Feb. 6.

• Monday and Tuesday – Students can use Mini-mart Madness coupons for 10 percent off purchases at Harrison Hall's Boiler Connection, Meredith Hall's Boiler Crossing and Tarkington Hall's Boiler Junction.

• Tuesday – Reapplication begins. Cary Quadrangle, Hawkins Hall, Hillenbrand Hall, Purdue Village and Young Hall will offer open houses from 2-4 p.m. for prospective residents.

• Wednesday – Those halls will offer open houses again from 7-9 p.m.

• Thursday – All 15 residence facilities will have a screening of the movie "Ray" for its residents. Refreshments will be provided.

• Friday, Saturday and Sunday – Each residence hall will offer free laundry services for its residents from 5 p.m. Friday to midnight Sunday.

To reapply, current residents should turn in an application and $75 deposit to the main offices of their current residence. To ensure staying in their current room or apartment, students should reapply by noon on Feb. 11. When returning an application to live in their same room or within the same residence, the student will be given a housing contract to sign which will guarantee them the room assignment. Those students requesting a move to a different residence will receive their contract a few days later, once the availability of the new room assignment is confirmed.

All contracts must be returned by noon on March 10.

Purdue University operates 15 residence facilities for students: Cary Quadrangle, Earhart Hall, Harrison Hall, Hawkins Hall, Hillenbrand Hall, Hilltop Apartments, McCutcheon Hall, Meredith Hall, Owen Hall, Purdue Village, Shreve Hall, Tarkington Hall, Wiley Hall, Windsor Halls and Young Hall.
