Go fish: Indiana aquaculture meeting promotes industry

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Indiana Aquaculture Association Inc. (IAAI) will offer a variety of insights on the aquaculture industry during its annual spring meeting on March 26.

The meeting will take place at the Marion County office of Purdue Extension, 6640 Intech Blvd., Indianapolis. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with the program starting at 8:30 a.m.

"I would encourage anyone interested to join and attend the annual meeting," said Allen Ullom, Purdue Extension Howard County educator and aquaculture coordinator for northern Indiana. "It is a great way to get contacts in the aquaculture industry such as producers, professionals and distributors. Being involved with the IAAI can put you in touch with someone when you have problems or questions that need answered."

Speakers during the meeting include:

• Bob Goetz, of Aquaculture of Kentucky Inc., who will present information on paddlefish.

• Jim Held, research specialist at University of Wisconsin-Madison aquaculture program, who will provide information on spawning, incubation and hatching of yellow perch and walleye, and also present the latest North Central Regional Aquaculture Center data for raising perch to market size.

• James H. Tidwell, of Kentucky State University, who will present the latest information on largemouth bass and sunfish.

Other meeting items include election of officers and directors, reports on upcoming association activities, a review of 2004 grants, an update on association goals and objectives, and a discussion of the Purdue aquaculture facility.

"We would really like to talk to new members about specific goals and objectives they would like to see in the association so we can get a better handle on how to get people educated," said Michael Miller, IAAI secretary/treasurer. "We want to move the educational and scientific process of aquaculture along in the state of Indiana."
