Student Wellness Office to launch Safe Spring Break Week

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – As students prepare for the upcoming spring break holiday, the Student Wellness Office at the Purdue University Student Health Center will conduct a Safe Spring Break Week campaign next week (March 7-11) at various campus locations.

The campaign will feature distribution tables and educational displays designed to promote healthy and safe behaviors during the holiday's annual festivities. Specifically, it will address travel safety, sun safety, sexual health, sexual assault prevention, alcohol poisoning prevention and tattoo and body-piercing safety.

"The students work hard during the semester, and they have every right to enjoy themselves during the holiday," said Brian Schlee, coordinator of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs education at the Student Wellness Office. "The goal of Safe Spring Break Week is to inform students about how they can be healthy and still have fun during their break."

In addition to the educational displays, which will be posted at residence halls and other locations throughout campus, Safe Spring Break Week will include the distribution of health and safety information as well as free "survival kits" between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on both Tuesday (March 8) and Wednesday (March 9).

The distribution tables will be located in the lobby of the Electrical Engineering Building on Tuesday and then in the Stewart Center lobby on Wednesday.

The kits will include emery boards, bandages, temporary tattoos, lip balm, sunscreen and car air fresheners. Condoms also will be available upon request.

Spring break at Purdue is March 14-18, when no classes will be held.
