Purdue celebrates 5th Annual International Awareness Week

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Fifth Annual International Awareness Week, designed to reflect the international spirit and makeup of Purdue students and staff, will be observed on the West Lafayette campus April 7-16.

"I encourage everyone to take advantage of this festive week when we recognize and celebrate some of the cultural traditions representative of Purdue’s international community," said Michael Brzezinski, director of the Office of International Students and Scholars, about events that are all open to the public.

Nearly 5,000 international students and 700 international faculty and staff from 127 countries work or study at the West Lafayette campus. Purdue ranks third nationally in the number of international students enrolled.

Highlights of International Awareness Week include:

  • The Purdue Model United Nations will hold a Security Council simulation at 7 p.m. on April 7 in Purdue Memorial Union, Room 118.

  • At 7 p.m. on Friday (April 8) the Asian Student Union Board presents "Journey to the East," a cultural mosaic of performances. Tickets for the event in the South Ballroom are $10.

  • The Office of Programs for Study Abroad will sponsor a Study Abroad Fair from 10 a.m. to 2

  • From 4-9 p.m. Sunday (April 10) International Fest 2005 will take place in the Purdue Memorial Union Ballrooms, which will be filled with interactive displays, live performances and free food. Travel tips and popular vacation destinations will be featured.

  • From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 13 there will be the Study Abroad Fair in Academy Park. Fulbright Scholars from Purdue will participate in a panel discussion, "Study Abroad for Faculty," at 8 p.m. that night in Rawls Hall, Room 1011.

  • The Indian Classical Music Association at Purdue will sponsor Hindustani sitar player, Kushal Das, in concert at 7 p.m. April 15 in Matthews Hall, Room 210. Admission is $10 for students and $20 for non-students.

  • Closing events on April 16 will include the International Food Bazaar from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at University Church, "Dia de la Familia" celebration from 1-3 p.m. at the Latino Cultural Center, and "Bridging the Atlantic," an African dinner and cultural program presented by the African Student Association at 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 102 N. Chauncey St. Admission is $10.

  • The Jahari Dance Troupe will conclude the week’s events with its Spring Review, sponsored by the Black Cultural Center, at 7 p.m. at Loeb Playhouse Student admission is $5, and non-student admission is $10.

    International Week is sponsored by International Students and Scholars, Purdue Student Union Board, Latino Cultural Center, Black Cultural Center, Purdue Student Organizations, University Residences, Office of Programs for Study Abroad and The International Center of Greater Lafayette, Inc.
