April 1, 2005 Consul General of Japan for Midwest region to speak at PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Yutaka Yoshizawa, the Consul General of Japan for the Midwest region, will speak at Purdue at 6 p.m. on Friday (April 8) in the Class of 1950 Lecture Hall. Yoshizawa's presentation, entitled "Why Does Japan Matter?" is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the Japan Student Association at Purdue. "From my understanding, this is the first time a Consul General of Japan has appeared on the Purdue campus," said Shuichiro Miwa, president of the Japan Student Association. "One of the goals of our organization is to provide an opportunity to exchange information and deepen the relationship between the many Japanese students on campus and the Purdue community as a whole. Another goal is to introduce Japanese history and culture to the community. This event will help us achieve both goals." Yoshizawa's presentation, which is expected to last 30-45 minutes, will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Yoshizawa has served as a Consul General of Japan since 2004. Previously, he held positions at the Japanese Embassy in Washington, D.C., at the embassies in India and South Africa and at Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo, among others. The Midwest office for the Consul General of Japan is located in Chicago. For more information on this or any other Japan Student Association events, visit the association's Web site.
