April 4, 2005 Singers, dancers to compete at Purdue Musical Organizations eventWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. More than 12 groups of Purdue students will show off their musical and dance skills at 7 p.m. on April 16 during the annual University Sing competition at Slayter Center.
There are two entry types: vocal/band and dance/step. Students can choose to perform through an independent organization, a housing unit or combine their talents with other students. Performances consist of an approximately three- to five-minute act or song (no lip-syncing). "We're happy to continue this tradition of spotlighting talented students," said Brian Breed, director of Purdue Musical Organizations, which sponsors the event. "This year, we've found a way to help out the community at the same time." PMO will donate $150 to the philanthropy of choice to the winners of each category. The winners also will receive trophies donated by Schug Awards. The U-Sing Student Board, consisting of members from PMO, Purdue Student Union Board, Purdue Student Government, the Panhellenic Association, the Interfraternity Council and Mortarboard, have been planning the event since last fall. Jeff McGee, a member of the Purdue Varsity Glee Club and one of the event's coordinators, said University Sing is an excellent opportunity for Purdue students to get involved in a campus tradition. "I think this is the perfect event for students on campus to get involved with during Mother's Weekend," said McGee. "It's building a much-needed tradition in a dynamic venue to showcase the talents we have across campus." The competition will be followed by a showcase of retrospective and contemporary hits in "Phenomena," an annual spring show presented by the Purdue Varsity Glee Club and the Purduettes. "Phenomena is student produced, directed and conceived from scratch," Breed said. "Last year, the Purduettes were added to the show, which gives us a chance to feature some great female solo rock songs." The first U-Sing was held in 1913 close to Mother's Day. In 1972 the event date was moved to Mother's Weekend in April. Prior to 2002, University Sing had not taken place since 1998. This is the fourth year of U-Sing since its revival.
