April 5, 2005 Purdue to honor student staff during National Student Employment WeekWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The Purdue University community will recognize student employees for their achievements on the job during National Student Employment Week on April 10-16. The National Student Employment Association and Student Employment Services in the Division of Financial Aid at Purdue promote the weeklong celebration as a way to acknowledge the importance of the student work experience. Employers both on and off campus are urged to recognize the efforts of their student employees during the week. Joyce Hall, executive director of financial aid at Purdue, said that there are many advantages and benefits of student employment both for working students and the employers who hire them. "For students, working while going to school can help defray college expenses and also provide important employment experience for when the students are ready to enter the work force full time," Hall said. "From an employer's standpoint, many find that their student employees often go above and beyond the basic duties of their job descriptions. Employers also find that many of the student employees who work for them today become career employees in the future. Ultimately, it works out for everybody involved." Hall said that while many Purdue students are employed on campus, there are a significant number working in the surrounding Lafayette and West Lafayette communities. Therefore, she encourages all area employers to participate in National Student Employment Week. "Student employees are dedicated and motivated workers who offer employers a unique variety of talents and skills," she said. "This is a great time for both university and community employers to recognize the dedicated efforts and achievements of their student workers."
