WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Black Cultural Center's Jahari Dance Troupe will tell stories through dance in its annual Spring Revue at 7 p.m. April 16 in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse.

The performance, entitled "The Dance We Dance," is under the direction of Black Cultural Center's artist-in-residence Kevin Iega Jeff. The piece will showcase the student dance company's abilities in techniques that range from traditional to contemporary.

"This performance takes the audience through real-life stories and reflects the African disaspora story of survival, perseverance, healing, inspiration, enlightenment, joy and freedom," said dancer Tamara Ammons-Jones, who also is student coordinator for the Black Cultural Center's Jahari Dance Troupe. "This semester's performance will engage the audience through the talents of the Jahari dancers and with the wonderful work of Kevin Iega Jeff."

Jeff attended the Julliard School in New York and was selected as one of the school's 100 outstanding alumni. He was a choreographer for Spike Lee's film "She's Gotta Have It," and he performed as the beast during the 1994 Academy Awards presentation of "Beauty and The Beast."

Tickets for the performance are $5 for students and $7 for the general public. Tickets also can be purchased at the Loeb Box Office or by calling (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW.

The Jahari Dance Troupe was established in 1971. The troupe, named for the Swahili word meaning jewels, is a student company trained in a variety of techniques that range from traditional styles to contemporary trends in black dance. Jahari's repertoire includes African, ballet, Caribbean, folk, jazz, modern dance and music video dance styles.
