April 7, 2004 Distinguished chemists to lecture at Purdue in honor of Herbert C. BrownWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Four researchers from the United States and Canada will deliver this year's 22nd annual Herbert C. Brown Lectures in Organic Chemistry at Purdue University on April 16. The lectures, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Stewart Center, Room 214, will open with a session in memory of Brown, the 1979 Nobel laureate for whom the series was named. Brown died on Dec. 19. The lectures are free and open to the public, but reservations are recommended. Reservations are required for the lunch and banquet. Lunch will take place at 11:50 a.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union's Sagamore Room. A social hour and banquet will follow at 6 p.m. at the Lafayette Country Club. Buchwald, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will speak on "Transition Metal-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions: Progress, Applications and Mechanistic Studies." Dennis P. Curran, of the University of Pittsburgh, will speak on "Making Natural Products by Fluorous Mixture Synthesis." Stephen Hanessian, of the University of Montreal, Canada, will speak on "Incentives for New Methodology Through Natural Product Synthesis." Edwin Vedejs, of the University of Michigan, will speak on "Heteroatom-Directed Hydroboration." The lectures have been made possible by Brown and his wife, Sarah Baylen Brown, who endowed the H.C. Brown Lectures, the H.C. Brown Distinguished Chairship, and the H.C. Brown Center for Borane Research. Source: P.V.
