April 8, 2005 Technology student groups to build Girl Scouts' 'fix it' skillsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. A group of Purdue construction management students will help Girl Scouts earn their "Miss Fix It" badges while teaching them basic construction and home-repair skills. The Women in Construction Management student organization will hold its annual Girl Scout Day from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday (April 9) in the Knoy Hall Construction Lab, Room B038. Club members will give a series of hands-on workshops to about 80 girls from the Sycamore Girl Scout Council. The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Building Construction Management Technology. "This program is a way we can help build the future of women in the construction management industry," said Stephen Schuette, head of the department. "Hopefully we can help encourage some of them in a career they might not have considered. Beyond that, they will learn skills that are important for us all to know, especially as we become adults and homeowners." Women in Construction Management members will give educational workshops on topics including drywall repair, hand tools, surveying and electrical work.
