College of Science to offer science-based summer programs

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University College of Science this summer will conduct two weeklong programs designed to expose young students to science-oriented careers.

Both of the programs are open to students entering seventh, eighth or ninth grades.

The Motivation and Momentum to Strive and Succeed in Science Program is scheduled for June 26 through July 2 and will follow the theme The Little Things Among Us. The second program, entitled ScienceScape, will take place July 17-23 and will follow the theme Star Struck: Exploration of Astronomy.

Both programs will feature hands-on experience for students as they work alongside science professionals from private industry as well as from Purdue's faculty, staff and student body. While all students are welcome at the camps, both are designed to expose science-based career options to students that are underrepresented in the field.

In particular, the Motivation and Momentum to Strive and Succeed in Science Program is designed for underrepresented minority students. ScienceScape is specifically designed for female students.

The application deadline for both camps is May 15, with each applicant required to submit a letter of reference and an essay along with application papers. Acceptance letters will be mailed to successful applicants by May 25.

The registration fee for the Motivation and Momentum to Strive and Succeed in Science Program is $200, which includes lodging, meals and all supplies needed for the week. More information about the program can be found online.

The registration fee for the ScienceScape program is $375, which includes lodging, meals and all supplies needed for the week. The fee also covers two field trips that are scheduled for the week, including one to Brownsburg, Ind., and another to Chicago. More information about the program can be found online.
