May 25, 2005 Latino Cultural Center welcomes summer with free concert, programsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. A July 9 concert by Grupo Fantasma, a musical group that plays traditional Latin music with a modern edge, is part of a series of summer events sponsored by Purdue University's Latino Cultural Center.
The Grupo Fantasma show, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Slayter Center for the Performing Arts. "This music has the ability to get audiences up on their feet and dancing," said Maricela Alvarado, director of the Latino Cultural Center. "We expect people of all ages and cultural backgrounds to enjoy themselves in such a great outdoor setting, and we're proud to be able to sponsor a group that will help people appreciate and discover Latin music." Grupo Fantasma, based in Austin, Texas, features Spanish-language vocals and a four-piece horn section anchored by a percussion and rhythm section. The group was named best Latin contemporary band four times at the Austin Music Awards. Another summer program at the Latino Cultural Center is the Bilingual Book Club's discussion of "Life in the Damn Tropics," written by David Unger. The public is invited to attend the meeting, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. on June 11 at the Latino Cultural Center. The story is about three Jewish brothers who struggle to keep their family's business ventures alive through a period of political unrest and upheaval in Guatemala during the early 1980s. The Latino Cultural Center also is sponsoring a showing of the Academy Award winning movie "El Mar Adentro/The Sea Inside" at 6 p.m. on June 16 in Beering Hall, Room 228.
