May 25, 2005 Outstanding students, faculty honored at receptionWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Outstanding students and faculty at Purdue University were honored by the Agriculture Council on April 17 during an awards reception. Student awardees included: James Bartlett, of Grand Island, Fla., who was recognized as the outstanding freshman in the College of Agriculture. Bartlett is majoring in pre-agriculture and biological engineering machine systems engineering. He is an active member of American Society of Agriculture Engineers. Lindsey Gordon, of South Bend, Ind., who was recognized as the outstanding sophomore in the College of Agriculture. Gordon is a preveterinary medicine major in the Department of Animal Sciences and is a member of Purdue's pre-vet club, among other activities. Amir Faghih, of Hunterstown, Ind., who was recognized as the outstanding junior in the College of Agriculture. Faghih is majoring in agriculture education and is a member of Farmhouse Fraternity, Alpha Zeta Honorary and the Purdue men's rugby team. Nicole Retzner, of New Palestine, Ind., who was recognized as the outstanding senior in the College of Agriculture. Retzner studies horticulture science in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture and is a member of the Golden Honor Society, Purdue Reamer Club and served as an ag ambassador. Faculty honored included: Kirby Hayes, an assistant professor of food science, who earned the College of Agriculture Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award. Allen Talbert, associate professor of youth development and agriculture communication, who earned the college's Richard McDowell Outstanding Academic Counselor Award. Mary Welch, assistant director for Purdue Agriculture's office of academic programs, who received the Outstanding Service to Students Award. Jim BeMiller, founder of the Whistler Center for Carbohydrate Research and professor of food science, who was recognized as outstanding graduate student educator in the College of Agriculture.
