May 27, 2005 2005 Home and Family Conference has full slate of activitiesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 2005 Home and Family Conference on June 8-10 at Purdue University will feature keynote speakers, tours, workshops, a choral workshop, evening entertainment and a style show. Conference participants can attend workshops and lectures each day given by Purdue Extension specialists, educators, university professors and other experts, on topics related to family relationships and health. This is the 92nd year for the event. "We have a diverse selection for a diverse audience," said Karen DeZarn, interim program leader for Purdue Extension Consumer and Family Sciences. "We want to attract new participants as well as our regulars." New to the conference this year is keynote speaker Gary Weaver, who will give a talk, titled "Culture, Communication and Conflict," which will focus on diversification and multiculturalism. His address begins at 8 a.m. June 9 in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. Another new face will be Jill Cordes, star of the Food Network's show "The Best Of." She will talk about her experiences on the TV show during an 8:30 a.m. presentation on June 10 in Loeb Playhouse. One lecture, titled "2005 Dietary Guidelines from Nutrients to Food Patterns," will be given by Connie Weaver, head of Purdue's Department of Foods and Nutrition. Weaver was one of 13 national committee members who worked on the government's new dietary guidelines announced this spring. Her talk is at 3 p.m. June 8 in Stewart Center, Room 218. An evening choral concert will feature the Melody Makers of Indiana with conductor Stan Kingma, accompanist Owen Robbins and 28 county Extension homemaker choruses. Conference participants also will have the opportunity to tour either Purdue's campus or several other historic locations around the Lafayette and West Lafayette areas. A style show featuring foreign clothing and costumes will wrap up the conference at the closing luncheon, which begins at noon on June 10 in the Purdue Memorial Union's North Ballroom. Cost for the conference is $50, which includes the evening entertainment and choral performance. Fees for the lunches and banquet are extra. Participants can register on-site or can pick up a program book at a local Extension office or online at http://www.ces.purdue.edu/cfs. Registration for the Home and Family Conference will be in the east foyer of Stewart Center from 4-7:30 p.m. on June 7 and again from 8-9 a.m. on June 8. Participants need to contact the hotels directly for room reservations.
