Cancellation of Mel Brooks play affects Purdue Convocations

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The national tour of "The Producers, the new MEL BROOKS Musical," which was scheduled to be at Purdue University on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 as part of Purdue Convocations' 2005-2006 Lively Arts series, has been postponed until the 2006-07 season.

A tour press representative said, "As 'The Producers, the new MEL BROOKS Musical' is such a significant property, Mel Brooks and Susan Stroman want to personally supervise the creation of the next incarnation of the touring production. In doing so, the caliber of the show will be maintained while being able to meet the physical demands of the upcoming route."

The scheduled tour was delayed so that Brooks and director and choreographer Stroman can work on completing and promoting the film version of the musical, which is being released this Christmas.

Anyone who has placed a Purdue Convocations ticket order that includes the Lively Arts series, "The Producers" as a single event or "The Producers" as part of a Pick 5 package, will not be charged for the amount of "The Producers" tickets if the order was paid by credit card; individuals paying by check will receive a refund check. If tickets to other shows were ordered, the refund check will be included with those tickets.

"The Convocations staff is very disappointed," said Katie Hutton, director of marketing for Purdue Convocations. "Hopefully we will have an opportunity to present 'The Producers' in the future, however, we are fortunate to still have a great season that includes other strong Broadway titles like 'Thoroughly Modern Millie,' 'Blast' and 'Oklahoma!'"
