August 31, 2005 Science Bound students to be honored at Colts training facilityWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University President Martin C. Jischke will join Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent Eugene White at an annual dinner in Indianapolis to recognize students who excelled in Purdue's Science Bound program. The event, which will be attended by approximately 400 students, parents, mentors and corporate partners, will take place from 6:30-8 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Indianapolis Colts' Union Federal Football Center, 7001 W. 56th St. Science Bound, a partnership among Purdue, Indianapolis Public Schools and the Indianapolis business community, was initiated by Jischke in 2000. It provides eligible students an opportunity to earn a four-year tuition scholarship to Purdue to study for a science, engineering or technology related career. The five-year program, which started with 60 middle- and high-school students, has grown to more than 160 students. The students participate in science-related after-school activities, field trips and summer camps to enrich their academic experience. The first graduates of the Science Bound program will begin their studies at Purdue in 2007. Wesley Campbell, Science Bound director, said the students participated in some special activities this past year. "Science Bound students have benefited from so many unique experiences, thanks to the generosity of the Indianapolis business community," Campbell said. "Summer internships, the Black Expo Youth Summit, Career Day, an archaeological dig, experiments with Purdue's nuclear reactor, the Bridge Bust competition and a trip to the Indianapolis Symphony are but a few of the activities that, with the support of our sponsors, enhanced their education." New students enrolled in Science Bound will participate in the Science Explorers program, which is open to any IPS middle school student interested in the Science Bound program. Campbell said the Science Explorers program offers students a chance to familiarize themselves with Science Bound and decide whether they want to pursue a science-related career. "The Science Explorers program provides an opportunity for additional students," Campbell said. "All eligible students now can experience Science Bound without making a commitment to continue with the program through high school." At the dinner, two Science Bound students will reflect upon their experiences at summer camp at Purdue and how the Science Bound program has impacted their lives. Campbell also will recognize Clean Stream, an Indianapolis program to restore streams and keep raw sewage out of waterways, which provided funding for the first endowed Science Bound scholarship. Clean Stream recently sponsored a golf event that raised more than $20,000 for the scholarship.
