Regional water quality meeting to take place on IUPUI campus

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A workshop concerning the use of long-term research to enhance water quality in the Great Lakes region will be take place from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 8 and from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 9 on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus.

The meeting is for anyone interested in water quality research and will explore water quality approaches currently in use as well as provide a forum for discussion of new technologies. There also will be an opportunity for hands-on experiences at field sites and in a data visualization laboratory.

"The goal of this meeting is to get everyone interested in water quality research together and then launch a unique regional effort to help establish and empower a Midwest effort in establishing new research sites," said Ron Turco, director of the Indiana Water Resources Research Center at Purdue University. "These sites can then be used to create comprehensive regional data sets which could be used to improve the region's water quality."

Meeting highlights will include discussions on the value of long-term research sites, approaches to establishing the sites, tools for integrated water quality monitoring programs and tours of prominent water quality stations. Top industry professionals from around the Great Lakes area will lead the meeting.

The registration deadline for the meeting is Friday (Sept. 2). Registration is free and available online, along with a full itinerary of the meeting's events. For additional information, contact Ron Turco at (765) 494-8077, rturco@purdue.edu.

This workshop is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Center for Earth and Environmental Science through the Great Lakes regional Water Quality Leadership Team, Indiana Water Resources Research Center and the Center of Earth and Environmental Science at IUPUI.
