Purdue notes National Disability Employment Awareness Month

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue's Affirmative Action Office is offering several events in recognition and celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Events are as follows:

• Tuesday, Oct. 4, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Americans with Disabilities Act for Supervisors, Stewart Center, Room 318. This workshop, open to all campus supervisors, will examine what constitutes a disability, how to recognize an employee’s request for a reasonable accommodation, and what to do next.

• Thursday, Oct. 13, 2-4 p.m. Americans with Disabilities Act Overview, Stewart Center, Room 218. Free and open to the public, this workshop focuses on what the law means, its history and what's in store in the future.

• Tuesday, Oct. 18, 1-2:30 p.m. Audio Conference. Purdue Memorial Union, Room 258. This workshop is the first session in the 2005-06 Americans with Disabilities Act Audio Conference Series presented by the Great Lakes ADA and Accessible IT Center. The program, free and open to the public, is designed to offer individuals advanced information on various audio-related issues.

• Thursday, Oct. 20, 6-7:30 p.m. Transitioning from College to Work. Stewart Center, Room 320. This workshop will provide students with disabilities the knowledge necessary to successfully transition from college to the work environment. Topics include requesting reasonable accommodations, deciding whether or not to disclose, and enhancing self-advocacy skills and self-knowledge.

• Wednesday, Oct. 26, 9:30-11:30 a.m. ADA/EAP Workshop. Stewart Center, Room 320. Counselors from the Employee Assistance Program will discuss mental illnesses within the workplace, their possible effects on job performance, methods to reduce these effects, and provide resources available for assistance.
