Pakistani student group raising funds for earthquake victims

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's Pakistani Student Association is collecting funds at various points on campus to help victims of last week's earthquake.

The earthquake hit the divided Kashmir region on the border of Pakistan and India on Oct. 8. As many as 40,000 have been reported dead, and the quake injured up to 60,000 people. It is estimated that 2.5 million people have been left homeless by the disaster.

The Pakistani Students Association is setting up collection stations at the following dates and locations:

Oct. 13-14 – On the lawn of the Computer Science Building and outside Knoy Hall

Oct. 15-19 – Outside the Class of 1950 Lecture Hall

Oct. 17-19 – On the Purdue Engineering Mall

Basit Shafiq, president of the association, said more fund-raisers might be planned in the future if there is still a need.

Those wanting to donate to the effort can also make a check payable to the Pakistani Student Association, c/o Basit Shafiq, Purdue University, 1285 Electrical Engineering Building, Box 404, West Lafayette, IN 47907. Additional ways to help can be found on the Pakistani Student Association Web site.
