October 19, 2005 Awards go to consumer and family sciences educatorsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Indiana Extension Educator Association honored several Purdue University consumer and family sciences educators on Tuesday (Oct. 18) during Purdue Extension's annual conference banquet. The Innovator Award was received by Rebecca Haynes of Marion County for her program designed to help people who don't have a checking account qualify for checking services. The Get Checking program is a collaboration of financial and educational partners in the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Through the program, participants were able to save an average of $400 in fees paid for check-cashing services and money order purchases. Joanne Lytton of Carroll County was honored with the Junior Award. Lytton directed a poultry safety lesson for low-income homemakers. The session was designed to teach about nutrition and food safety. Specific features of the lesson included cost savings, food safety when thawing, preparations, handwashing, utensils, cutting surfaces, meat thermometers, storage and leftovers. Eddie Sutton of St. Joseph County was the Senior Award honoree for a course in financial management. The programs were offered through the Center for Homeless, Work One Development, libraries, Habitat for Humanity, among others. Due to rising demand for the program, a new series to train others to teach the class had to be developed. The program has resulted in collaborations with 11 agencies.
