Extension agriculture and natural resources educators honored

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Indiana Extension Educator Association on Tuesday (Oct. 18) honored several Purdue University agriculture and natural resources educators during Purdue Extension's annual conference banquet.

Ann V. Delchambre of Putnam County received the Innovator Award. Delchambre developed a program to educate hobbyist horse owners about proper care of their horses. The eight-week program included horse safety, facilities, cost of horse care, form vs. function, horse nutrition, hoof care, horse health problems and keeping horses healthy. The program will be offered again, and other counties also are interested in offering the program.

Nick Held of Dearborn County was presented the IEEA Junior Award for a program he designed to educate the public about the health and economic benefits of producing and consuming fresh vegetables. Held, with support of several Master Gardeners, helped establish a community garden. With plots for each participant, the program reported saving each person an estimated $310 on food.

David Osborne of Ripley County received the Senior Award for his fish-cleaning workshop. Osborne designed the workshop to teach how to properly clean and prepare fish and how to understand the Indiana Fish Consumption Advisory recommendations. Information on the benefits of eating fish, proper handling and safety were addressed.

Dan Baugh of Monroe County was presented the Career Award. Baugh has offered many agriculture and horticulture programs at the county and area level. Baugh has previously received the Distinguished Service Award and IEEA Senior youth Educator Award. Serving as a program coordinator and instructor to more than 220 Master Gardeners, Baugh also has been involved with the Jennings County Farmers Market, Hendricks County Garden Show and Jennings County Ag Day.
