November 3, 2005 Association of University Research Parks honors Purdue Research ParkRESTON, Va. - The Association of University Parks (AURP) today recognized Purdue Research Park for Excellence in Technology Transfer at the organization's annual conference in Raleigh, N.C. AURP represents leaders of more than 130 of the nation's university-affiliated research facilities. University research parks are magnets for regional and local economic growth and development. Their primary role is to promote the transfer of technology and business skills between the university and their business and industry tenants. The Excellence in Technology Transfer award is presented annually to the AURP member park that best demonstrates success in the commercialization of university research through existing businesses or startup companies in a business incubation environment. To date, the Purdue Research Foundation - the Purdue Research Park's parent organization - has licensed technology to 49 startup companies, of which 33 are Indiana firms, with 19 firms resident in Purdue Research Park. The diverse licensed technologies treat cancer, detect chemical weapons, stymie computer hackers, monitor blood pressure of premature babies and produce new apple and turfgrass varieties. "America's future depends on our ability to move ideas from the laboratory to the marketplace," said Martin C. Jischke, president of Purdue University and the Purdue Research Foundation. "At Purdue we take this responsibility to our state and our nation very seriously. This award challenges us to work even harder to share what we've learned in order to create the next-generation model for economic development." AURP promotes the development and operations of research parks that foster innovation, commercialization and economic competitiveness in the global economy by supporting collaboration among universities, industry and government. AURP member research facilities have served as business incubators for companies such as computer manufacturer Hewlett-Packard, and biotechnology companies Genentech and Amgen and the Internet service provider, EarthLink.
