November 22, 2005 Crop advisers conference provides well-grounded educationWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - An annual conference co-sponsored by Purdue University Extension offers an in-depth look at agronomic issues that could confront certified crop advisers in 2006. The 2005 Indiana Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) Conference takes place Dec. 13-14 at the Indianapolis Marriott East, 7202 E. 21st St. Hourly workshops on managing crops, pests, nutrients, and soil and water are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Those involved in seed, crops, fertilizer, agricultural chemicals and related businesses also are welcome to attend. The third annual conference is a collaboration between Purdue Extension and the Indiana CCA Program. "The conference is for our certified crop advisers, the people that farmers go to first with questions and decision making," said Bob Nielsen, Purdue Extension corn specialist and conference coordinator. "These are professionals who are working with a lot of different farmers who are farming many acres, and they have a chance here to multiply their knowledge in many different topic areas." Conference workshops will deal with a variety of topics. Speakers include university experts and industry professionals from across the United States. One workshop focuses on nitrogen management in corn. "With such high prices for nitrogen, ways to manage it more efficiently will be discussed," Nielsen said. Another session, presented by Christian Krupke, a Purdue associate professor of entomology, will examine soybean aphids. The pest was a problem for Indiana soybean farmers this past season. Krupke's discussion will include a year-end review and offer updates on new management tools. CCAs attending can earn their annual requirement of 20 continuing education units. Full conference registration for Indiana certified crop advisers is $195 or $100 for one day. For non-CCAs, full registration is $300 or $150 for one day. Registration fees will increase $25 after Dec. 5. Online registration is available. The Indianapolis Marriott East is located at 7207 E. 21st St., Indianapolis.
