WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service and the Gibson County Plot Committee will hold the 2005 Grain Production Seminar on Thursday (Dec. 1), with registration beginning at 8 a.m. at the Vanderburgh County 4-H Center in the Activities Building.

The seminar discussions begin at 8:30 a.m. and will end at 1:30 p.m. There is no cost to attend the seminar.

Purdue speakers who will be featured are:

• Dirk Maier, Purdue grain handling specialist, who will speak on pest-management practices for pest control and long-term grain storage, as well as managing quality and purity of specialty grains.

• Gary Michel, Purdue Extension educator-Warrick County, who will speak on soybean rust fungicide regulations. Those attending for Pesticide Applicator Recertification Program credit must attend this session.

Other topics and speakers will include:

• Biotechnology Stacked Traits: Value for Southwestern Indiana Farmers and Management for Grain Purity, given by David Uhr, a technology development representative for Monsanto.

• Bio-fuels: The Benefits and Advantages of Using Our Products, given by Belinda Puetz of the Indiana Soybean Board.

• Global Outlook on White Corn Markets, given by Brian Harris, vice president of the Global Risk Management Group.

"This is an annual seminar that has been going on for several years, but this year we felt it beneficial to participants to add a Pesticide Applicator Recertification Program session," said Jim True, Extension educator in Gibson County.

The morning session will start with a Pesticide Applicator Recertification Program for those farmers needing program credit. There will be a $10 charge for those seeking credit, and participants will also need to bring their pesticide license. Attendance is mandatory from 8:30-11:30 a.m. to receive credit. In addition, there will be certified crop adviser and commercial pesticide applicator continuing educational hours available.
