Kids' Safety Day teaches local children tips to stay safe

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Local children will be able to learn about safety and first aid at a community-wide educational event.

Purdue Village will hold Kids' Safety Day from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 4) at the Purdue Village Community Center, 250 Nimitz Drive. The event is free and open to children living in Purdue Village and the West Lafayette community.

At the event, children will be able to make their own homemade first aid kits out of provided supplies, learn about poison and fire prevention, and see first-hand demonstrations of fire fighting and protection equipment. Local police also are expected to be on hand to make fingerprint ID cards for children.

Children and their parents also will be given information about fire safety that will be available in five languages.

"A large number international families live in Purdue Village and the community as a whole," said Jill Murray, a Purdue Village resident who organized the event. "It is important to make information available for all families to help protect their children. There are simple things that children and their parents can do to help improve their safety, and this event will give them some of the tools to help prevent accidents and respond to them effectively when they do happen."

The event is supported by Pay Less Super Market, which donated many of the materials.
