Purdue NotebookFebruary 3, 2006 Campus activities Roy Gutman, the Pulitzer Prize-winning foreign editor for "Newsday," will present "Mayhem in Taliban Afghanistan: How We Missed the Story" at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15 in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. Gutman has reported on the fall of the Berlin Wall and the disintegration of Yugoslavia. He is the author of two books, "Banana Diplomacy: The Making of American Foreign Policy in Nicaragua 1981-1987" and "A Witness to Genocide: The 1993 Pulitzer Prize Winning Dispatches on the Ethnic Cleansing of Bosnia." His talk is part of the Sears Lecture Series, which is sponsored by the Department of History.
Faculty and staff honorsThe first class of Purdue University School of Nursing's doctor of nursing practice degree program has been selected. The Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering at Purdue's Discovery Park is providing scholarships to the students.The five, all of whom currently teach at the School of Nursing, are: Melanie Braswell, a clinical assistant professor, worked in surgery for 27 years at Home Hospital in Lafayette. She has been teaching at the School of Nursing since 2001. Michael Criswell, a clinical assistant professor, specialized in critical care nursing at Greater Lafayette Health Services before coming to the School of Nursing in 1990. Polly Royal, a clinical assistant professor, was a medical/surgical nurse for 14 years and became a nurse educator in 1997. Kathleen Schafer, a clinical associate professor, worked in pediatrics, obstetrics and women's health, came to Purdue in 1989. RuthAnn Smolen, a visiting assistant professor and director of the Center for Nursing Education, has been a maternal-child health educator as well as a critical care, medical-surgical, public health and maternal-child nurse. She has been teaching at the School of Nursing since 1995. More information can be found online.
Student honorsCadet Stephen Sara has been selected by the Indiana Department of the Reserve Officers Association (ROA) to attend the ROA national mid-winter conference Feb. 5-8 in Washington, D.C. He will be the cadet representative for the state of Indiana. Sara is a senior majoring in history from Cary, Ill., who serves as the cadet battalion commander for Purdue's Army ROTC Boiler Battalion. After graduation, he will be commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant of field artillery in the Army.
