Purdue provost appointed to White House committee

Sally Mason
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — President George W. Bush has appointed Purdue University Provost Sally Mason to be one of 14 members of the President's Committee on the National Medal of Science.

The committee reviews nominations made by members of the National Academy of Science, academia and the general public, and makes recommendations to the president on an annual basis. This week the White House awarded eight science laureates with the medal, which recognizes leaders in science and engineering. Mason will serve on the committee until Dec. 31, 2008.

At Purdue, Mason is responsible for planning, managing and reviewing all academic programs at the university's West Lafayette and four affiliated branch campuses. Her office administers a variety of initiatives aimed at the continuous improvement of Purdue's academics.

Mason, who has been provost since 2001, also is a professor of biological science. From 1980-2001, she was on the faculty of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Kansas, serving as professor, associate dean and dean.

She received a bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Kentucky in 1972, a master's degree in developmental biology from Purdue in 1974 and a doctorate in cellular, molecular and developmental biology from the University of Arizona in 1978.
