Affirmative Action Office to promote Disability Awareness MonthWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The Purdue University Affirmative Action Office will offer the following events in acknowledgement of Disability Awareness Month, which is recognized each March throughout Indiana.The Purdue celebration will include five events from March 1-28 and will feature a presentation by Fred Wittmeyer, volunteer liaison officer for Paralyzed Veterans of America in Cincinnati, Ohio. All of the Disability Awareness Month events at Purdue are free and open to the public. The complete schedule for Disability Awareness Month events at Purdue is as follows: March 1, 10-11 a.m. Memorial Union, West Faculty Lounges. "Band Together," a reception honoring the 2006 Focus Award winners. Fred Wittmeyer, volunteer liaison officer for Paralyzed Veterans of American in Cincinnati, Ohio, will be a guest speaker. March 8, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 318. PADI Web-Accessibility Forum: Members of Purdue Advocates for Disability Issues will share tips on how to make Web pages more accessible to people with disabilities. March 9, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Stewart Center, Room 218A. ADA Overview: Participants learn about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA): what the law means, its history and what is in store in the future. March 21, 2-3:30 p.m., Stewart Center, Room 318. Planning for Emergencies in the Workplace: This session is the third in a four-part ADA audio conference series focusing on employment. Recent events such as the hurricanes of 2005 have brought forth a renewed awareness of the value and importance of emergency planning. Ensuring that the needs of people with disabilities are included in this planning is essential to meeting the needs of today's diverse workforce. This session will explore the key issues and discuss resources that are available to assist employers and their employees as they address this critical workforce. March 28, 2-4 p.m., Stewart Center, Room 313. ADA for Supervisors: Open to all campus supervisors, this workshop will examine what constitutes a disability, how to recognize an employees request for a reasonable accommodation and what to do next.
