Purdue feed school to educate on feed laws, security

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University Agriculture will offer workshops in various locations across the state for those who manufacture feed.

"It's a way for us to communicate with a large number of people on how to comply with the law," said Bob Geiger, feed administrator, with the Indiana State Chemist office located at Purdue. "We are going to cover how to properly manufacture and use feed."

AFeed School 201 is designed to provide participants with information including medicated feed, the animal identification program, custom mixing, labeling guidelines and more. Certificates will be issued to participants at the end of each session.

Geiger said biosecurity and bioterrorism are topics that also need to be addressed.

"In the past feed mills haven't been very secure facilities, so we want to discuss security for possible issues that might arise," he said.

Pre-registration is required, but there is no charge for the workshop. Lunch will be offered at each session, along with handout materials about topics covered during the school.

Dates and locations for each session, which run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., are as follows:

• Feb. 28 at Central Christian Church in Seymour

• March 1 at the Community Education Center in Greensburg

• March 7 at the Clay County fairgrounds in Brazil

• March 8 at the Dubois County fairgrounds in Jasper

• March 14 at the Farm Bureau Building in Muncie

• March 15 at the Purdue Extension Tippecanoe County office in Lafayette

• March 22 at the Elkhart County fairgrounds in Goshen
