Veterinarian to discuss international implications of bird flu

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A veterinarian who is an expert on patterns, causes and methods to control diseases will speak at Purdue on Thursday (Feb. 23) about international implications of bird flu.

John Kaneene, University Distinguished Professor of Epidemiology and director of the Populations Medicine Center at Michigan State University, will give a seminar at 4 p.m. in the School of Veterinary Medicine, Lynn Hall, Room G221. His talk, which is free and open to the public, is entitled "Zoonotic Aspects of Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) and International Implications."

Kaneene, who also is adjunct professor at Purdue, is an epidemiologist whose research focuses on understanding disease processes and the design, implementation and evaluation of prevention and control strategies.

He has been a fellow of the American Epidemiologic Society since 1994 and has served on the National Academies National Research Council Board and the Advisory Committees on Food and Health.

The seminar is sponsored by International Programs in Veterinary Medicine in collaboration with the Department of Basic Medical Sciences in the School of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue.
