Mardi Gras comes to Purdue residence hallWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Students at Purdue's Hawkins Hall will celebrate with a New Orleans-style Mardi Gras event as a way to experience the annual American tradition rooted in French history. The celebration will be held from 8-10 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 28) in the Boiler Metro at Hawkins Hall. It is open to all residents of the residence hall. The Mardi Gras event, which marks the beginning of Lent, will include Cajun food, live jazz music and other traditional Mardi Gras activities. In addition, residents are able to purchase and decorate masks prior to the event, and awards will be given for the best mask and the resident who is best dressed in formal attire. Hawkins Hall resident assistant Emma Clothier said the event would celebrate not only Mardi Gras, but the city of New Orleans. "A large proportion of Hawkins Hall residents are international students, and this is a chance to bring a decidedly American tradition to the hall for residents to experience," said Clothier, a master's degree student from England. "With the tragedy that New Orleans has seen in the past six months, this is a way to honor the city with a Purdue version of its most famous event."
