Felker conference to show how diet, nutrition affects aging

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Current Purdue University research on how food and nutrition affects aging will be the topic at the 2006 Felker Leadership Conference.

The April 7 event, sponsored by the College of Consumer and Family Sciences, is open to the public and will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the University Inn and Conference Center.

The cost (including lunch) is $40, and reservations are required by March 24. To register, contact CFS Development and Alumni Relations at (800) 535-7303 or (765) 494-7890, or e-mail cfsalums@purdue.edu. Purdue President Martin C. Jischke and Dennis Savaiano, dean of the College of Consumer and Family Sciences, will make opening remarks.

Connie Weaver and Wayne Campbell, both from the Department of Foods and Nutrition, will talk about keys to successful aging.

Connie Weaver
Weaver, who is a distinguished professor and head of the department, is internationally recognized for her research in calcium metabolism and bone health. She will speak about the new dietary guidelines from her perspective as a member of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. She also will discuss the challenges the committee faced and how industry is responding to the new dietary guidelines.

"Osteoporosis and other chronic diseases are very real threats to aging populations, but the dietary guidelines can give us more specific, quantitative ways to fight age-related diseases," Weaver said.

Wayne Campbell
Campbell, an associate professor in the Department of Foods and Nutrition, researches basic and clinical human nutrition with special emphasis on aging. He will discuss the importance of dietary protein and exercise, and how adults of all ages can use diet and exercise to help control weight and improve overall health.

The Felker Leadership Conference was established in 1993 to support programs in education and scholarship at Purdue. Donald W. Felker served as dean of consumer and family sciences from 1987 until his death in 1992. Felker established a fund to provide leadership opportunities to students, faculty and alumni in honor of his wife, Evelyn, who earned a master's degree in 1976 from Purdue.
